Primary School>Language Education

In accordance with our Language Policy, we aim to raise individuals who use language as a tool for inquiry and transdisciplinary learning in order to become global citizens within the framework of PYP. Language plays a vital role in the construction of meaning. Thus, we aim to raise individuals who can communicate and express themselves in both their mother tongue and a foreign language fluently and follow the current developments in the world.
Mother Tongue - Turkish
Language of instruction in our school is Turkish. The aim of the Turkish program is to enable students to use and appreciate Turkish language while developing fluency and accuracy in the key language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and visual literacy skills.
Our students:
-
analyze and generate new ideas from what they listen to using appropriate techniques, empathise with the speaker and express their thoughts freely / demonstrate effective listening strategies in a variety of situations
-
apply correct and appropriate use of Turkish language
-
read a variety of texts to develop reading comprehension, interpretation and thinking skills. Reading becomes a habit for our students. They make use of the rich resources offered by the school and they enjoy reading activities.
-
express their feelings and thoughts accurately in writing and share their written products with the school community
Foreign Language: English
We provide our students with learning experiences to improve their listening, reading, writing, speaking and visual literacy skills in authentic learning environments. We encourage students to think and improve their language skills. We help students to see foreign language ( from basic every day English to Academic English) as a tool to express themselves and discover the world around them. We also help students foster an appreciation for literature and a love of reading in a foreign language with various projects for different interests.
The ages between 0-14 is considered to be optimal for second language acquisition; so our English education starts with the bilingual system in Kindergarten. To maximize the amount of time our students are exposed to English, the bilingual system also continues in the following years. In primary school we offer bilingual lessons both in workshop classes and Social Studies classes to support our students’ language profiles. IB PYP Language Scope and Sequence Documents and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) criteria are taken as reference in the planning of our English studies for each grade level. Both the student language development and the quality and efficiency of the English programs we offer are monitored and assesed closely with a variety of evaluation and assessment tools.
In our schools, a successful foreign language education is offered by incorporating digital tools and communicative learning experiences that feed the curiosity, interest and creativity of our students into teaching and learning practices.
